There’s no doubt you’ve seen burrata on your Instagram feed or TikTok For You page—or on our very own menu! The gooey cheese is having a moment (!). And while many people love it (it’s great topped on toast, salad, pizza, a sandwich, or just on its own), a lot of folks don’t actually know what it is. Here, we school you on the popular cheese so you can enjoy it with the satisfaction and knowledge of both its history and flavors.
What Is Burrata?
Burrata is a soft Italian cow milk cheese made from mozzarella and cream. It’s shaped into a plump ball, with a solid outer layer that resembles fresh mozzarella. Break into the ball and you’ll find the ooey gooey inside, a soft mixture of cream and small cheese curd. The complementing textures are what make this cheese so unique and delicious!
What Does Burrata Taste Like?
Like the inside of burrata’s texture, this cheese tastes a lot like butter! It also features a rich, milky flavor and a subtle sweetness thanks to the cream.
Where Does Burrata Hail From?
Burrata was created in the 1920s in Italy’s Apulia region. It originated as a way of making use of leftovers from the cheesemaking process, so nothing would go to waste. Now, of course, it’s considered a high-end cheese with a bigger price point. So, a “from trash to treasure” story, if you will. You gotta love that!
Burrata at Mulino
At Mulino, we offer a burrata salad, made up of a base of organic arugula, roasted bell peppers, roasted tomato, and olives, topped with balsamic dressing and burrata cheese, naturally. The best way to eat it is to cut into the burrata and mix all the soft cheese into the salad!
